10 Things Smart People Don’t Do
Success is a recipe.
Passionate, enthusiastic, driven, smart – the key ingredients of a successful person.
Take away one piece of the puzzle and it all comes tumbling down.
Without passion you lose your enthusiasm, and without enthusiasm you have no drive to keep doing what you are doing.
Sustaining these three for any real amount of time means being smart enough to control yourself. We’re not talking about I.Q. points here, we’re talking about an inward intelligence. The ability to know your own self. To be smart enough to pick the right path (or at least a good path) and stick to it.
Smart people manage their inner selves. They keep their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in check. They set themselves up for success in life. Check out these things that smart successful people don’t do.
1. They Don’t Expect Immediate Results
Smart people understand that real change takes time. They apply their skills and, more importantly, their time to the best of their ability. Whether they are improving themselves or getting a new business off the ground it does not matter, smart people don’t expect immediate results.
2. They Don’t Give Up After Their First Failure
Smart people use failure as an opportunity to to learn, not to complain. They hate failure but they’re not afraid of it because they don’t see it as a reason to give up. They are willing to keep trying until they get it right.
3. They Don’t Like Being Busy All the Time
Smart people don’t like being busy just to be busy. They aren’t afraid to put everything off to be alone with their thoughts. They use downtime to sort their thoughts and be productive. They’re not social hermits but they enjoy their own company and aren’t dependent on others for companionship and entertainment all the time. They understand that some peace and quiet is what everyone needs.
4. They Don’t Make the Same Mistakes Over and Over
Just as they don’t give up after a failure, smart people don’t repeat their mistakes over and over either. They accept responsibility for their decisions and learn from their past mistakes. Smart people take a moment to reflect on what went wrong so they can make better decisions next time.
5. They Don’t Fear Taking Risks
Smart people don’t take foolish risks or act on a whim, but they don’t mind taking calculated risks. They spend time weighing the risks and benefits before jumping into something. They do more than simply put the horse before the cart, smart people make sure the horse is in optimal condition before they ever take it out of the barn. They consider all potential downsides before they take action and then come up with a backup plan just in case.
6. They Don’t Worry About Pleasing Everyone
Smart people are not afraid to say no or speak their minds when necessary. They understand that they don’t need to please everyone all the time. Smart people are fair as possible in their decisions but know how to handle those people who inevitably won’t be happy with every decision they make.
7. They Don’t Live in the Past
Smart people live for the present and always plan for the future, but they don’t waste time dwelling on the past or wishing things could be different either. They don’t fantasize about how things might have been or constantly relive bad experiences in their minds. Smart people know how to let go of their past and people in their past who are not worth hanging on to.
8. They Don’t Waste Time on Things They Can’t Control
Smart people focus on what they can control in their lives and put what they cannot on a watch list in the back of their minds. They don’t worry about things they can’t control, they simply adjust and keep moving forward.
9. They Don’t Listen to Naysayers or the Mediocre
Smart people don’t allow others to control their lives, and they don’t give someone else power over them. Smart people understand that they are striving for more in life than most people, so they don’t look for approval from mediocre people or listen to the advice of someone who is not on the same path as they are. They love good advice and always welcome it, but they understand that most 9-to-5 naysayers are on the sidelines watching and cannot fully understand the game. They are in full control of their own emotions and decisions and they alone choose how to respond.
10. They Don’t Fear Doing Something Different
Smart people accept and embrace change, after it is thought out and considered. They welcome positive change and are flexible when the time comes. They understand that sometimes doing things differently is the best way to love forward so they adjust as needed.
BONUS: They Don’t Resent Someone Else’s Success
Smart people celebrate other people’s success in life. Instead of being jealous they are happy for others and look for opportunities to join them. They recognize that success is not a singular event but a process and anyone who finds success should be praised and rewarded. Instead of feeling cheated when others surpass them it drives them on to work harder.
